Light at the End of the Tunnel

Friends,

It's mid-April, and the students of the Akron Public Schools are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Soon the 2007-2008 school year will be complete, and we look ahead to a busy summer.

This is always my favorite time of the year, because now is the time when we honor our staff & students who've achieved so much. I got the opportunity to participate in the TOPS Recognition Night at North High School this month, and what a remarkable event. This event honors our Career Ed/Vocational students for their achievements. Many of these students are going on to college or some kind of post-secondary program, and they are some of the best we have in APS. As I shook their hands as they crossed the stage, I couldn't help but feel such a sense of pride.

We have great kids in Akron Public, and a wonderful staff.

Next month we will honor our teachers at our annual Teacher Recognition Banquet. I love this event, as I get a chance to visit with many of the same teachers who made such a difference in my life. I'm sure this year will be no different.

I'm very aware of the perception in our community that sometimes paints a negative picture of our schools, but after three school years as Board Member I can say without hesitation that we have some of the best schools in the country.

Miracles are happening everyday in our classrooms. I encourage everyone to take the time and visit one our schools. You may be surprised what you find.

As we look towards the summer months, we see a time of transition as David James assumes the office of Superintendent. I have enormous faith and complete confidence in David James, and I look forward to his tenure as our leader.

We will also be saying goodbye to Dr. Small. I must confess, it makes me very sad to do so. Dr. Small and I have known each other ever since I was born. He's a good friend and a tremendous leader for Public Education. The Board, as well as others, will be honoring Dr. Small in the months ahead for his lifetime of service.

So many good things are happening in the Akron Public Schools, join us in the fun.
